Party Like It's 1649

I spent the early part of this week (amongst other things) making a fancy 17th century outfit for the party i went to last night. I've mentioned my reenactment hobby and i guess this post is where that hobby crosses paths with this one in the most beautiful and fluid way : )

In the 1640's it was all about having a short straight torso with major clevage and big-ass child bearing hips. Well, clevage is not my strong point but child bearing hips? Oh yeah, i can do those!
Because i had a small amount of time i decided to just make stays and a skirt in some pretty nice but completely fake silk!

Stays or A Pair of Stays is a 17th century corset. Back then it counted as underwear so wearing them alone isn't authentic but there were no paying public at the party so screw authenticity, i'll dance in my undies if i wants to!

These are from day one of the process, before i cut my thumb open trimming my steel boning to size : /

And these are from just after i finished hand sewing the last few details on; late at night, hence the flash!

I didn't take any pictures of the skirt whilst i was making it because it only took my a couple of hours and i just wanted to get it all finished! With so much stuff going on in my life at the moment it was actually really good to just sit down and make something completely selfishly!

This is what i looked like yesterday evening with all the finished garments on (the white under-dress is called a shift, i owned it already, i think i'd have gone nuts if i'd of had to make that up to!) The sun was shockingly bright so i look a bit daft in the pictures but whatever, you can still see the clothes :)

So there you have it, a 1640's OOTD! Including a glimpse at the making process. I hope i didn't geek out too much for y'all. I'm really quite a massive history nerd and get especially giddy over old school fashion so, yeah, fingers crossed i still managed to entertain and keep you interested!

aeroporto

Just a few pictures from the departures "lounge" where i had to sit and wait for 3 hours yesterday, i suppose i'd rather that than have the Phalanges or whatever explode halfway through the flight, but still i did let out a little groan when they made the announcement.

not really an OOTD but BOOTS,LEGGINGS & SCARF:EVANS DRESS:H&M

this little lady was flapping around the B gates at Heathrow, she sat on my bench for quite a while so i took some pictures and even had time to draw her.
I decided that she was a good omen.
(i'm assuming it was female due to the lack of fance in the feathers)

B.M.B. the advice column

Basically i got a comment from a user named jigglypuff on my last post.
(I hope they're reading because girrlll, you inspired this : D)

Here it be:
Firstly, thank-you jigglypuff, what a lovely comment, humbled by your awesomeness.

Now i get "you look rheet good but i couldn't wear it" comments in real life quite often, from friends and strangers (mostly drunken ones on nights out but whatevs it still counts) and i always, always say "Bullshit, you can wear what you want, you're gorgeous!"
Because i'm brash but lovely like that : )

A few months/a year ago i would have never ever worn half the stuff that's hanging in my wardrobe as we speak. N.E.V.E.R.
As i've said before; blogging and the fatshion community is in part to thank for my new found confidence, but i have to give myself some credit and say that me getting some ballz is also to thank.

So this is my advice to those wanting to try new tings.

There are two options.

Option One - easing yourself in

Inspiration is the starting point, take the item you're afraid of wearing and do your research. Look about on blogs, see if you can find someone with a similar body shape to your wearing said item. Find retailers that sell what you're looking for, see if it's available in a range of sizes/colours/materials. Compile a few pictures of designer versions or see if any celebrities you like have worn something similar.
Next step is to go and try on a bunch of different options in shops and take pictures there so you can look at yourself again at home, try to do this trying on trip on a day when you're feeling open minded, positive and maybe do it before you eat a burger, chips, garlic bread and a pint of cider for lunch (just saying, i don't feel so pretty trying on stuff after i've done this!).
After reviewing your pictures, if you feel ready, buy the skirt/top/dress/jeans or whatever but leave the labels in and keep your proof of purchase. Wear the item around the house, watch some TV, laze about, get comfortable. (Do Not Spill Shit On It!) Another good thing to do is build some outfits around it, (jigglypuff, with skinnies i normally wear a flowy/looser top), can this item work as part of your wardrobe?
If you still don't like, just return. If you're starting to like, don't return.
Wear the item to go somewhere where you feel less pressured to look good at first, like a supermarket (unless the mentioned item is a ball gown, that's just silly. Actually to me it sounds cool, but i'm one raisin short of a fruitcake so...) and take it from there.
Start working it into your wardrobe more and more and before you know it your fear will be gone! Awesome!

Option Two - be impatient and get drunk

Throw yourself in at the deep end as i have done.
Alcohol is not actually necessary for this option, but it kept my mind off how i looked so helped with the whole process.
I broke my playsuit in with this method and i was 100% sure i'd never look good in one of those.
Basically if you haven't got the time for option one; go out and buy the item your afraid of, take out the tags, throw away your receipt and wear it on a night out.
Amazing friends who tell you look good every time you ask also help and i'm not going to lie, luck plays a pretty big role.
If i were you, i'd go with option one.

Seriously though, it can take a lot to change the way you look at yourself. Time and effort is often required. I'm fat and spent my whole life being told that was bad, so i assumed i had to live in ill fitting boys clothes (of the non fashionable variety) and it took a while and a lot of unworn clothing to break out of that.
Be fearless, be patient, be confident and you'll be wearing whatever you want before you know it.

Colouring In

I've become pretty obsessed with colour and I'd really like summer to roll around so i can get some brights into my wardrobe without feeling too silly.
Here's some visuals, all ripped from Elle Magazine!

General Update

I have been quite busy of late, in a very lovely way.
I've had a proper social life which has been amazing and made me feel well popular! It's quite silly that i have so many good friends locally who i never seem to see but we have all  started to make a real effort to spend quality time with each other, last week alone i had home cooked dinner with one friend, a baking night with four other ladies and a quick visit to one of my girlies (that turned into 8 hours of talking and Wii playing plus a yummy pork chop dinner).
Add to that the extra work hours i took to save major $$ for the Devonshire Girl in Seattle trip and you're left with a very busy bee indeed.

In other news;
I got an iPhone on Saturday, my contract was ready for upgrade and it turned out to be the best option. It's just a 3Gs as they're still asking crazy money for iPhone 4's but seriously, i have become Apple's bitch in a matter of days! It's just so handy and useful and cool! It has so far lead to me getting a Tumblr, Skype and a shitload of apps and in all honesty i don't think i'm halfway done.
One app i got straight away was the style.com one, i love how i can just spend my lunch hour flicking through all the latest fashion week stuffs picking out my favourites, i shared a buttload on tumblr but here's a couple i haven't posted:
Both from Christian Siriano Fall 2011 RTW, images from Style.com.

More on Tumblr, i never really understood it before, i figured it was to Blogger what Twitter is to Facebook, but i didn't see the appeal. But now i think it was hand crafted for me.
I am a really visual person, i take photos and i see photos and colours and drawings and paintings all the time that i just love and want to shout about and i'm the same with songs and music videos and films and poems and quotes.
I generally just get quite fixated on small things, sometimes i save them up and do an inspiration bit on here but a lot of the time i just leave it and enjoy it alone, however i get no release from that so now i have a Tumblr i feel kinda satisfied.
It sounds stupid, i know. But i guess that's just how the cookie crumbles.
Here's the address for it if you fancy a peek: http://bustbuttons.tumblr.com/

I've got a couple posts lined up. Some stuff on trends i'm laarrrrrvvveee-ing right now. Something with a bit of a summery vibe (rain is pissing me off yo) and hopefully some ootd's.
However i do have a long trip ahead of me tomorrow to an audition for a university and i won't be back until Thursday night so next post will probably be Saturday.
I promise i still got love for blogger and i'll be back on track before you know it.
Love to Y'all ♥

Bust My Buttons: Boys (again)

My dear friend Zeke has a great sense of personal style. He might not be rockin accessories fresh off the runway but he knows what he likes and what looks good.

He rolled up at my house wearing this gem of a t-shirt and i felt it must be documented.

Badass Right?
And the best thing about it: Primark, £7.
I'd have never have guessed

Check the acid wash jeans as well. Boy's got fashun credz.

Bust My Buttons: Boys

Let's here it for 'em. And all their penis-y goodness : )

There is something quite lovely about a well dressed man, but i think i speak for a lot of women when i say it's a tough balancing act for fellas. If you're slobby, ew. If you're too much of a pretty boy, ew.
I likes them well dressed but still a bit rough around the edges.

Quinto, Bloom, Efron, Franco. Good Work.
Quinto, Bloom, Efron, Franco. Goooooooooooooood Work!
Jack Black and Seth Rogen; you guys clean up really well, i like it when you switch from the tees and jeans thing, it's nice.
Dallas Green; because i love a man in plaid.
J Timberlake and D Beckham you guys get props. And so do you Robert Pattinson (but if the stench rumours are true, you are soo not having a slice of my pie, you're probably too busy eating Kristen Stewart's anyways; if those rumours are true!)
Jay Z, well done to you sir. Kanye West, same.

Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp, you've been slammed in the past for your beardy hobo lookin ways but i remain in firm support of your personal styles.

Keith Richards, coked out god of pirate fashion.
Hendrix, HENDRIX!

These are just a few, I'll stop now before this turns into a "50 best dressed" list. As if i haven't objectified men enough this evening!
This is quite a lengthy post i've done on something that doesn't really rank hugely highly in my list of things i first look at when eyeing up the opposite sex, i've done it because i was inspired to and because it's great to see anyone with good personal style, male or female.
Not because i turn away any man who "hasn't made an effort"

Any favourite man things when it come to their style ladies?

Today I

Went to the fabric shop.
I won't get into a long bllaeerrrrhhhh about how much i love haberdashers/fabric shops, but lets just say i for sure do!

Anyway, i was there to buy costume making things for panto and happened to notice that they sold really nice faux leather.
I had a fit.
Because I've been dying to get my hand on a pair of nice faux leather leggings that don't look cheap and are not described as "wet look". Why would i want my legs to look like they're wet? Why?
(No offence meant if you own a pair, it's a personal preference that i like my legs to look dry.)

Pay day is in about a week and I'll more than likely get some of this lovely fabric. Would you guys be interested in seeing a DIY post and the outcome?

Please, please say yes : )

It's like, a fashion entity heard me

Just days after i bitch and moan concerning trousers, not one but two pairs turn up on the ASOS Curve website that i like.

BAM:

Even though the top pair are shiny, i still like. And I've been thinking about getting a pair of black skinny cropped numbers, for 50's inspired outfits where a circle skirt and full blown petticoat is not appropriate, but jeans just will not do.

I find it quite amazing that this has happened. I wonder if whoever/whatever heard is working on those velvet trews for me? Yes. Please.

Trouser Me

Standing outside in the freezing cold the other night wearing a beautiful but not so warmth retaining outfit i came to the stark realisation that i might not make it through winter with only tights or leggings to cover my legs. I decided that this winter, i want, some trousers. I want to be this well trousered:
Image From Fatshionable.

I planned to shop around for trousers today. And to spice this post up a bit there was going to be changing room pictures and little captions and everything. But after trying on one pair in Evans i cut my trouser shopping short.
I tried on a pair in what is normally my size and as per usual with trousers, they looked like utter shiz.
It's a mixture of my weird as hell hip shape and being in between sizes that makes them all look so rubbish. I tried on a 24, they fitted, but, as i may have previously mentioned, looked nasty. I could size up but they'd be too big, and i don't like having to pull my kecks up every two fucking seconds. WELL LOOK AT THAT TROUSERS, YOU MADE ME SWEAR ON THE BLOG, WHICH I TRY NOT TO DO, THANKS!
These horrible things mentioned above also tend to apply to jeans a lot of the time, i know i am in no way alone with jeans, i feel your pain if you too are never happy with your denim leg covers.(jeans also present the other problem of not being able to get my calves into skinnies so i have to buy straight cut and sew them to fit how i like)

I really want to wear trousers, and i feel sick to my stomach with envy every time i see someone wearing them well, like that girl in the fabric shop with her green cotton military inspired peg leg numbers; wide waistband and antique gold buttons included, *cries*.

I've seen a few pairs i like but each present a different problem.

This Style369 pair are 100% viscose, which could well mean jersey, the mother of all cheap clingy fabrics, and not my best friend in trouser form.

This ASOS pair could have been the holy grail of trousers, i could have kept my legs warm and rocked the velvet trend but oooh nooo, guess what, they only go up to an 18. BOOOOOO, make them for the curve range now!

This ASOS Curve pair are what i may buy next month. But i may not. Because being an actual human being, my thighs touch and hell, they even rub together when i walk, which can mean bald patch thighs on these bad boys as they're made of cord. And I'm not just guessing that it'll happen, I've had the problem before.

Have i dragged you all down with my moaning and ranting yet? I don't mean to be a debbie downer but it gets frustrating.
I'm not completely defeated by the whole situation, i can live without trousers. And if i really feel like my need for a pair is crucial i can try making some.
Just being the impatient madam that i am, i want them now, in a lovely style at a reasonable price.

God I'm a nightmare. Damn You Trousers!

Boots Are My Favourite

They really are.
And i find these quite desirable:

STUNNING! I've adored these boots since the second i laid eyes on them. I NEED BIGGER WAGES AND SMALLER FEET.

Also, more sexy boots.
 Oh loooooooorrd.

Favourite Fall Fashions

I'm English so according to my dad Fall, should not be in my vocabulary. However, as English as i am, I'm a sucker for alliteration so Autumn got the boot and Fall was in.
This post is about what i loved on the runways enough to be squishing it into my wardrobe over the coming weeks.

Wool.
Sounds random but i loved the presence of thick woolen fabrics on the runways. Especially because a lot of them were used in tailoring. Wool is a long standing coat material but i love the eccentric English vibe of a thick tweed suit.

From Left to Right: 3.1 Phillip Lim, Marc Jacobs, Rag & Bone, Prada, Louis Vuitton, Vivienne Westwood Red Label, Dries Van Noten.

Shearling/Sheepskin
I've loved sheepskin since forever ago so seeing the Burberry Prorsum line was like pornography. It's everywhere on the high st. right now in both good and bad forms. In all honesty i don't know for sure if other lines used sheepskin, but Burberry's use of it was a smash hit so here is the holy grail of sheepskin jackets:

Prints/Patterns
I'm a self confessed print-phobe. Or at least was. I'm loving florals and the different takes on them designers had. I'm totally a fool for embroidery too, it will be hard thing to work in though because I'm not sure i could pull off big embroidered pieces, I'm thinking accessories for that one.

From Left to Right: Alexander McQueen, Balmain, Erdem, Betsey Johnson, Etro, Diane von Furstenberg.

This has taken me so long to actually get done. I don't know that it's the best post ever. But the pictures are pretty : ) Remind me never to try and post and make a full roast dinner simultaneously ever again though, it's damn hard!

What stuff will you guys be working into your wardrobes for autumn? Have any designers inspired you to break out of your comfort zone or are you just sticking to old faithfuls?

Let me know!

Peace & Love.

Inspiration

Totally dedicated to Gogol Bordello
I love this band a hell of a lot. I'm lucky enough to have seen them live and it was one of the most amazing, trippy, hot, sweaty and fun nights of my life. It was completely electric.
I've been listening to them non stop this weekend and felt the need to post on how much i love the way the band dresses, all of the members, not just the girls. (i hate the idea that "style icons" have to be the same gender as you, rubbish)

Seeing these pictures makes me want to hit up the local army surplus store, raid my bead collection, cut up some floral sheets, blindly grab items from a charity shop, stick it all through a sewing machine and wear whatever comes out with a pair of retro Nike's and and hand fulls of Indian jewellery and whatever shit i can find from my pop punk days (studded cuffs, skull print everything, etc)

Vogue August

Just some scanned in pictures and personal opinions.

First up, i love the idea that fashion is inspired by not only the eccentricity of people and life and art but also the reality and practicality of it. And i felt like these pictures summed that up quite well. It is pretty strange to read about comfortable simple fashion then to see a model wearing those shoes on the next page.

That is a beautiful thing to say Ralph Lauren but timeless beauty is not this:
You know I'm right.

To end on a high not these are things i loved.
(apologies for the fact this is 3 scanned in pics merged together)

Love how curvy and REAL this model looks. I know it's the fabric but Louis Vuitton's A/W collection, as Marc Jacobs himself said, was all about celebrating the woman and i feel like the cuts and silhouettes did that even if the models were still typically petite.

Shoes by Alexander McQueen. I'll leave it at that.

Peace.
